Let \(K\) be a metrizable compact space and \(\mathcal{H}\) a subspace of \(C(K)\) that contains the constant functions and separates the points of \(K\). Let \(f\) be a bounded Borel function on the Choquet boundary \(Ch_{\mathcal{H}}K\). The abstract Dirichlet problem consists in finding an \(\mathcal{H}\)-affine extension of \(f\) to the whole \(K\) that preserves topological properties of \(f\). \textit{H. Bauer} [Ann. Inst. Fourier Grenoble 11, 89--136 (1961; Zbl 0098.06902)] proved that this problem has an affirmative answer with continuous \(\mathcal{H}\)-affine extensions if and only if \(Ch_{\mathcal{H}}K\) is closed. The second author [Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 71, No.~2, 235--258 (2005; Zbl 1075.46005)] obtained a similar result with Baire-one extensions, \(Ch_{\mathcal{H}}K\) being an \(F_{\sigma}\) set. In this paper, the authors construct a metrizable simplex \(X\) such that, for each \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), there exists a bounded function \(f\) on ext \(X\), of Baire class \(n\), that cannot be extended to a strongly affine function of Baire class \(n\). They show that such an example cannot be constructed via the space of harmonic functions. Two open problems are presented.
