If \(G\) is a finitely generated group, then \(a_ n(G)\) denotes the number of subgroups of \(G\), which have index \(n\) in \(G\). The main result is Theorem: Let \(G\) be a finitely generated residually finite group. Then \(G\) satisfies \(a_ n(G) \leq n^ s\) for some \(s\) if and only if \(G\) is a soluble-by-finite group of finite rank.
