The authors introduce a quadrature method for solving hypersingular boundary integral equations arising in two-dimensional potential problems. The method uses a substraction technique for the strong singularity of the kernel and is based on the trapezoidal rule. If the boundary coincides with the unit circle then the quadrature method is equivalent to the trigonometric Galerkin method. Therefore the mapping properties of the hypersingular integral operator imply the stability and convergence of the method under consideration for any smooth boundary. The authors also obtain asymptotic error estimates and give some numerical examples.
