Let \(BG\) be the classifying space of a (usually finite) group. Following \textit{A. Adem} et al. [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 152, No. 1, 91--114 (2012; Zbl 1250.57003)], one filters \(BG\) by increasing \(B(q,G)\), which are geometric realizations of spaces which are obtained from maps from lower central series of a free group. If \(p\) divides \(|G|\), one may also use pro \(p\)-groups to get \(B(q,G)_p\). The first main result is a weak equivalence \[ V_{p\mid |G|} \sum B(q,G)_p\to \sum B(q,G) . \] One may also ask whether the \(B(q,G)\) are Eilenberg-MacLanes spaces \(K(\pi ,1)\). The author shows that the answer is negative for extra special 2-groups (central \(Z/2\) extensions of sums of \(Z/2\)'s). It would be wrong to limit this paper to those subgroups, where, for extra special groups, these colimits are finite. There is also a study of the rational \(K\)-theory of \(B(2,G)\), as well as a calculation of higher homotopy groups of \(B(2,G)\), in the extra special 2-groups. Altogether, this is a rich paper.
