It is shown that the unique Gibbs measure of an infinite spin system with short range interaction on a one-dimensional lattice satisfies a logarithmic-Sobolev inequality. This work continues the study of the author on the same subject in Lett. Math. Phys. 20, 173-182 (1990), and Dobrushin uniqueness theorem and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, J. Funct. Anal. (1991; to appear). An extension of the ideas of this work resulted [see the author and \textit{D. W. Stroock}, The logarithmic Sobolev inequality for continuous spin systems on a lattice, ibid. (1991; to appear)], in showing the logarithmic-Sobolev inequalities for the large class of continuous spin systems on higher-dimensional lattice \({\mathbb{Z}}^ d\), \(d>1\). [For some applications of logarithmic-Sobolev inequalities to statistical mechanics and large deviations see also the author and \textit{D. W. Stroock}, The equivalence of the logarithmic Sobolev inequality and the Dobrushin-Shlosman mixing condition (MIT, March 1991)].
