The natural nth derivative of a real-valued function is, in many circumstances, the nth Peano derivative; this is defined to be \(f_{(n)}(x)\) when we can write \[ f(x+h)=f(x)+\sum^{n}_{k=1}\frac{h^ k}{k!}f_{(k)}(x)+o(h^ n),\quad as\quad h\to 0. \] This survey contains an excellent summary and discussion of the properties of these derivatives, together with those of certain natural generalizations such as \(L_ p\) and approximate Peano derivatives. Symmetric Peano derivatives is not given a very full treatment, the basic paper of \textit{F. Wolf} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 45, 328-356 (1939; Zbl 0021.40202)] is not in the extensive bibliography. In addition the paper by \textit{E. Corominas} [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 81, 177-222 (1953; Zbl 0051.042)] is underestimated by the authors; the paper uses very elementary methods, based on the equivalence of \(f_{(n)}(x)\) and \[ D^ nf(x)=\lim_{h_ n\to 0}...\lim_{h_ 0\to 0}n!\sum^{n}_{k=0}\frac{f(x+h_ k)}{w_ k}, \] (where \(w_ k=\prod^{n}_{i=0,i\neq k}(h_ k-h_ i)\), and \(0\leq | h_ 0|<| h_ 1|<...<| h_ n|)\), and contains most of the results in \textit{H. W. Oliver's} paper [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 76, 444- 456 (1954; Zbl 0055.285)].
