The aim of this work is to study the stability properties of the following system \[ (1)\quad \partial u_ i/\partial t=\mu_ i\Delta u_ i+\sum_{j}(B_{ij}u_ j+ \] \[ \int^{t}_{-\infty}C_{ij}(t- s)u_ j(s)ds)+f_ i(u_{1,t},...,u_{N,t}),\quad i=1,...,N \] in \(\Omega \times(0,\infty)\), with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions on \(\partial \Omega\) and \(u_{i,t}(x,\vartheta)=u_ i(x,\vartheta +t), i=1,...,N\), \(\mu_ i>0\), \(B_{ij}\), \(C_{ij}(t)\) bounded linear operators and \(f=(f_ 1,...,f_ N)\) a nonlinear, in general unbounded, operator in \(L^ p(\Omega,R).\) Local existence and uniqueness of solutions are obtained by regarding (1) as a nonlinear perturbation equation of the corresponding linear equation without the term in f. The stability theory is developed by means of the asymptotic stability of the fundamental solution associated with (1). The author makes use of the theory of Fourier-Laplace transform in Hilbert space \(L^ 2(\Omega,R^ N)\). \textit{A. Schiaffino} and \textit{A. Tesei} [Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei, VIII. Ser., Rend., Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Nat. 67, 67-74 (1979; Zbl 0463.45007)] have already treated equations of the form (1) in the framework of \(C({\bar \Omega})\)-theory, along the same lines as \textit{S. I. Grossman} and \textit{R. K. Miller} [J. Differ. Equations 13, 551-566 (1973; Zbl 0256.45011)] even if to ensure the validity of their methods it is necessary that \(\Omega \subset R^ n\), with \(n\leq 3\).
