The main result is: if \(h_ j\) is the element in the cohomology of the mod \(p\) Steenrod algebra corresponding to the indecomposable \(P^{p^ j}\), then for all primes \(p\geq 3\) and integers \(j\geq 2\) the element \(h_ 0h_ j\) is an infinite cycle in the Adams spectral sequence. Furthermore, if \(p\geq 5\) (or if \(p=3\) and j is odd), then \(h_ 0h_ j\) represents an element of order \(p\) in the stable \(2(p^ j+1)(p-1)-2\) stem. This means that if \(p\geq 5\) the only classes in the 2-dimensional cohomology of the mod \(p\) Steenrod algebra that are infinite cycles are \(a^ 2_ 0\), \(a_ 1\), \(b_ 0\), \(k_ 1\), \(h_ 0h_ j\) for \(j\geq 2\) and their scalar multiples by elements of \({\mathbb{F}}_ p\). The authors also obtain results about which secondary Brown-Peterson cohomology operations detect elements in the stable stems.
