The main result is the following: Let G be a finite group. Then any two maximal nilpotent subgroups of G, whose intersection contains its own centralizer in G, are conjugate in G. Even in the soluble case, this is a significant generalization of the well-known theorem of Fischer on the conjugacy of maximal nilpotent subgroups containing the Fitting subgroup.
