Let L be a finite dimensional Lie algebra of characteristic \(p>0\) and \(L_ 0\) a subalgebra of L with cobasis \(\{e_ 1,...,e_ k\}\). Then there exist \(m_ 1,...,m_ k\) such that \(z_ i:=e_ ip^{m_ i}+v_ i\) belong to the center of the universal enveloping algebra U(L) of L where \(v_ i\) is of degree less than \(p^{m_ i}\). Let \({\mathcal O}(L,L_ 0)\) be the subalgebra of U(L) generated by \(L_ 0\) and \(z_ 1,...,z_ k\). It is shown that U(L) is a Frobenius extension of \({\mathcal O}(L,L_ 0)\). A general cohomology reduction theorem for a class of modules (encompassing various types of Verma modules) is obtained which allows to reduce the discussion of the (restricted or ordinary) cohomology groups of L to that of \(L_ 0\). One interesting consequence is a proof of a conjecture by G. B. Seligman concerning the existence of a finite-dimensional L-module M such that \(H^ n(L,M)\neq 0\) for all \(0\leq n\leq \dim_ F L\).
