    This paper concerns the best approximation of a linear operator (in general, unbounded) by operators of norms at most N on a certain class. The author also deals with the closely connected problem of continuous embedding of the space \(W^{{\mathcal P}}_{r,\pi}\) in the space \(W^ Q_{r,q}\) with respect to the norm: \[ \| f\|_{W^{{\mathcal P}}_{r,\pi}}=\| f\|_ Lr+\sum^{n}_{j=1}\| P_ j(D)f\|_{p_ j},\quad f\in W^{{\mathcal P}}_{r,\pi}, \] where \(1\leq r,q<\infty\), \({\mathcal P}=(P_ 1,...,P_ n)\) is a collection of polynomials \((P_ j(D)\) is the corresponding differential operator), Q is a polynomial \((Q(\xi);\xi \in R^ m)\) and \(\pi =(p_ 1,...,p_ n)\), \(1\leq p_ j<\infty\).
