An artinian ring A with 1 and Jacobson radical J is called ''of second local type'', if for every indecomposable right A-module M the factor module \(M/MJ^ 2\) is indecomposable. Studying the indecomposability of certain amalgamated sums the author gives necessary conditions for rings with self-duality to be of this type. Moreover he shows that indecomposable quasi-Frobenius rings of this type are serial or of Loewy- length \(\leq 3.\) The main results of the second part are the characterization of artinian rings which are of right and left second local type, and the characterization of left serial algebras over an algebraically closed field which are of right second local type.
