The author proves that every nonscalar square matrix over a field with at least seven elements is similar to a matrix with all its entries different from zero. If the field contains two, three or four elements he gives counterexamples to the theorem. The theorem was proved by the reviewer for infinite fields [Linear Algebra Appl. 1, 127-138 (1968; Zbl 0155.066)]. The result remains open for the field of five elements.
