A conjecture of Kobayashi claims that a general hypersurface of degree \(d\) in the \(n\)-dimensional complex projective space is hyperbolic if \(d>2n\). By the theorem of Brody this is equivalent to the following assertion: If \(M=M_{d,n}\) is the moduli space parametrizing such hypersurfaces, then there is a proper subvariety \(E\subset M\) such that \(t\in E\) for all \(t\) for which the corresponding hypersurface \(X_t\) contains an entire curve \(f:{\mathbb C}\to X_t\). In this article the authors achieve a first step in this direction: They show that there does not exist an open subset \(U\subset M\) with a holomorphic map \(F:U\times{\mathbb C}\to X\) (where \(X\) is the respective universal space) such that the restriction \(F_t| \{t\}\times \mathbb C\) takes values in \(X_t\) and defines a non-constant entire curve for any \(t\in U\). In other words: If the Kobayashi conjecture fails, the ``excessive'' entire curves can not be grouped into one holomorphic family defined over an open subset of the moduli space. The key methods for the proof are curvature arguments, using a result of Siu that the vector bundle \(T_X\otimes p^* O_{P_n}(1)\) is globally generated.
