The author has developed a bifurcation theory for nonlinear operators under the assumption of Hadamard differentiability [cf.\ \textit{G. Evéquoz} and \textit{C. A. Stuart}, Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A, Math. 137, No. 6, 1249--1285 (2007; Zbl 1134.35014)] with the aim to study bifurcation points of the equation \(F(u)=\lambda u\) in a real Hilbert space. It turns out that bifurcation points cannot belong to the spectrum of \(F'(0)\). As illustration of the obtained abstract results, the following version of the stationary nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ -\Delta u+qu+h\bigg(\frac{| u| }{\xi}\bigg)u= \lambda u,\quad u\in H^2(\mathbb{R}^N) \] is considered under additional assumptions on the functions \(q\) and \(h\). A typical example of such nonlinearity is \(h(s)=\frac{s^{2\alpha}}{(1+s^2)^{\alpha}}\) for some \(\alpha >0\).
