From the Introduction: ``\textit{W. Y. Lee} [Proc.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 129, No.\,1, 131--138 (2001; Zbl 0965.47011)] has recently considered the filling-in-holes problem of \(2\times 2\) upper triangular operator matrices. His main result can be described as follows: if \(M_C = \left( \begin{smallmatrix} A & C \\ 0 & B \end{smallmatrix} \right)\) is an operator acting on the Hilbert space \(H\times K\), then \[ \sigma_w (A) \cup \sigma_w (B) = \sigma_w(M_C) \cup W, \] where \(\sigma_w (B\cdot)\) denotes the Weyl spectrum and \(W\) is the union of certain of the holes in \(\sigma_w(M_C)\) which happen to be subsets of \(\sigma_w (A) \cap \sigma_w (B)\). \textit{J.\,K.\thinspace Han, H.\,Y.\thinspace Lee} and \textit{W. Y. Lee} [Proc.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 128, No.\,1, 119--123 (2000; Zbl 0944.47004)] have proved that the above result is also true for spectra of \(A,B\) and \(M_c\) in Banach spaces. In this note, we show that the passage from \(\sigma_\tau(A)\cup\sigma_\tau(B)\) to \(\sigma_\tau(M_c)\) is the punching of some open sets in \(\sigma_\tau(A)\cap\sigma_\tau(B)\), where \(\sigma_\tau(\cdot)\) can be equal to the Browder spectrum or essential spectrum and the result is not true if \(\sigma_\tau(\cdot)\) is equal to the Kato spectrum, left (right) essential spectrum and left (right) spectrum.'' At the end, the authors present illustrative examples.
