Let \(V\) be an infinite-dimensional vector space over the field \(F\). The authors wish to study subgroups \(G\) of \(\text{GL}(V)=\Aut_FV\) with the property that for each \(F\)-subspace \(W\) of \(V\) either \(\dim_F((\sum_{g\in G}Wg)/W)\) is finite or \(\dim_F(W/(\bigcap_{g\in G}Wg))\) is finite. In this paper they start this study by considering periodic such \(G\). In particular they prove the following. Suppose \(G\) is as above. Additionally assume that \(G\) is soluble, periodic and such that if \(F\) has positive characteristic \(p\), then \(G\) has no elements of order \(p\). Then \(G\) is a finite extension of an Abelian group of finite rank.
