For a sequence space \(E\) and an infinite matrix \(A=(a_{nm})\), the space of all sequences \((z_{m})\) such that \((\sum_{m}a_{nm}z_{m})_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\in E\) is denoted by \(E(A)\). Given a sequence \(\alpha=(\alpha_{m})\) with \(\alpha_{m}>0\) \((m\in\mathbb{N})\), the space of all sequences \((z_{m})\) such that \((\frac{z_{m}}{\alpha_{m}})\) is bounded, convergent to 0, and convergent, is denoted by \(s_{\alpha}\), \(s_{\alpha}^{0}\) and \(s_{\alpha}^{(c)}\), respectively. One of the two main results of the paper is concerned with the spectrum of the difference operator \(\Delta\) on these sequence spaces, the other establishes conditions under which a matrix \(A\) maps the sum \(s_{\alpha}^{0}((\Delta-\lambda I)^{h})+s_{\beta}^{(c)}((\Delta-\mu I)^{l})\) into \(s_{\gamma}\) (here \(\lambda,\mu,h\) and \(l\) are complex numbers). For example (Proposition~15(iii)): If 1) \(h\) and \(l\) are integers, 2) the sequence \((\beta_{n-1}/\beta_{n})\) ist convergent, and 3) the inequalities \(|\lambda-1| >\limsup_{n}(\alpha_{n-1}/\alpha_{n})\) and \(| \mu-1| >\lim_{n}(\beta_{n-1}/\beta_{n})\) hold, then \(A:s_{\alpha}^{0}((\Delta-\lambda I)^{h})+s_{\beta}^{(c)}((\Delta-\mu I)^{l})\rightarrow s_{\gamma}\) if and only if the conditions \[ \sup_{n}\frac{1}{\gamma_{n}}\sum_{m=1}^{n}| a_{nm}|\alpha_{m}<\infty\;\text{and}\;\sup_{n}\frac{1}{\gamma_{n}}\sum_{m=1} ^{n}| a_{nm}| \beta_{m}<\infty \] are satisfied.
