A group is said to satisfy the weak maximum (minimum) condition for finitely generated subgroups, if every ascending (decending) series of finitely generated subgroups with infinite indices breaks off. The author considers the effect of these conditions in particular group classes. For shortness we will refer to the two conditions by \(Max^*\) and \(Min^*\), and will give some examples of the results. A locally nilpotent group G satisfies \(Max^*\) if and only if G has finite Hirsch number (Satz 1). A torsionfree locally radical group with \(Max^*\) is soluble and of finite rank (Satz 3), if there is a general bound on the ascending series, information on the structure is given (Satz 4). A finitely generated soluble group G satisfies \(Min^*\) if and only if G is of finite rank (Satz 6). The following are equivalent for finitely generated torsionfree subgroups of GL(n,K): (i) \(Max^*\), (ii) \(Min^*\), (iii) finite rank (Satz 11).
