We present several ways to prevent and a posteriori eliminate hourglass instabilities from solutions obtained with underintegrated stiffness matrices. Several theoreticl results previously obtained for a model problem are stated, then the excitation of spurious oscillations is analyzed for a broader class of problems. Finally, the analysis is extended to linear and nonlinear elasticity problems: the spurious modes are constructed and their a posteriori elimination is described. Numerical results show that this method is accurate and efficient.
