For a local noetherian ring A and an ideal I two of the following three properties always imply the last one: (a) the ring A is a complete intersection, (b) the ring A/I is a complete intersection, (c) the first homology module is free and its square is equal to the second one (Koszul homology of A with respect to I). - The proof is a consequence of the computation of the third homology module of the cotangent complex of the A-algebra A/I.
