The author deals with estimates for intermediate derivatives. Let U be the class of functions \(u\in C\) (the space of continuous bounded functions on \(R^ n)\) such that \(\Delta u\in L_{\infty}\) (the Lebesgue space on \(R^ n)\), where \(\Delta\) is the Laplace operator considered in the sense of generalized derivatives. The main results of the paper \((i=1,...,n\), \(n\geq 3\}:\) \(1\circ\) The exact inequality \[ \| \partial u/\partial x_ i\|_{\infty}\leq (2 \| u\|_{\infty} \| \Delta u\|_{\infty})^{1/2} \] holds for \(u\in U\). \(2\circ\) For \(\alpha,\beta >0\) \(\omega_ i(\alpha,\beta)=\sup \{\| \partial u/\partial x_ i\|_{\infty};\quad u\in U,\quad \| u\|_{\infty}\leq \alpha,\quad \| \Delta u\|_{\infty}\leq \beta \}=\sqrt{2\alpha \beta}.\)3\(\circ\) The best approximation \[ E_ i(N)=\inf_{\| T\| \leq N}\sup_{u\in Q}\| \partial u/\partial x_ i-Tu\|_{\infty} \] of the operator of differentiation by linear operators \(T: C\to C\) with the norms \(\| T\| \leq N\) on the set \(Q=\{u;\quad u\in U,\quad \| \Delta u\|_{\infty}\leq 1\}\) satisfies \(E_ i(1/h)=h/2\) for \(h>0.\) \(4\circ\) The error \[ \nu_{\alpha}({\mathfrak M})=\inf_{T\in {\mathfrak M}}\sup \{\| \partial u/\partial x_ i-Tv\|_{\infty};\quad u\in Q,\quad v\in C,\quad \| u-v\|_{\infty}\leq \alpha \} \] of restoration of values of the operator \(\partial /\partial x_ i\) satisfies \(\nu_{\alpha}({\mathfrak M})=\sqrt{2\alpha}\) for \(\alpha >0\) where \({\mathfrak M}\) is the class of all (or of all bounded linear) operators \(T: C\to C.\) \(5\circ\) the assertions \(1\circ\), \(3\circ\) and \(4\circ\) remain valid if the space \(L_ 1\) of integrable functions is considered instead of C and \(L_{\infty}\) in all appearances (including the definition of U). The proofs and construction of extremal operators are based on integral representation of derivatives of \(u\in U\) by means of a special Green function for a layer in \(R^ n\).
