This work is concerned with a semigroup approach to linear functional equation (1) \((Dx)(t)=f(t)\), \(t>0\), \(x=\phi (t)\) for \(t<0\) in a Banach space X. Here D is an unbounded, linear, closed operator, on a function space Y which is \(L^ p(R;x)\) or \(C_ 0(R;X)\). A typical example is \(Dx=dx/dt-Ax\) where A is the infinitesimal generator of a strongly continuous semigroup of linear operators in X. Under suitable conditions on D it is proved that Eq. (1) generates a strongly continuous semigroup on an appropriate subspace of \(D\times Y\). The general theory applies to neutral functional differential equations, Volterra integrodifferential equations, and other types of functional differential equations.
