Let \(V\subset H\) be a real separable Hilbert spaces. The authors consider the initial value problem for the abstract wave equation \[ (1)\quad u''+A(t)u=g(u);\quad u(0)=u_ 0,\quad u'(0)=u_ 1 \] where u(t) \(\in V\), A(t) maps V to its dual \(V^*\) and g is a nonlinear map from the ball \(S(R_ 0)=\{u\in V:\) \(\| u\| <R_ 0\}\) into H. The function g is locally Lipschitz in \(S(R_ 0)\). The authors prove local existence, uniqueness, and continuation theorems. Global existence is proved when \(g(u)=\epsilon \phi (u)\), \(\phi\) is a potential and A is independent of t and coercive provided the initial data and \(\epsilon\) small enough. The authors show that global nonexistence may occur when \(\epsilon\) is sufficiently large.
