The paper studies transition from zero to positive topological entropy for smooth maps from the circle to itself. This transition can be achieved in several ways. The main result of the paper is the following complete classification of all the possible routes to topological chaos. Ignoring pathological classes we are left with the following four: \(S^{\pm}_{p/g}:\) Transition from frequency locked maps with ratio p/q to non-monotone maps with no periodic orbits of period q, and with rotation interval I such that max \(\rho\) (I)\(>p/q\) or min \(\rho\) (I)\(<p/q\) according to \(\pm\), and I non-trivial arbitrarily close to \(S^{\pm}_{p/q}\). \(H^{\pm}_{p/q}:\) Transition from frequency locked maps with ratio p/q with all periodic orbits of period \(q\cdot 2^ n\), some n, to maps with non-trivial rotation interval \([p/q,\rho_ 2]\) or \([\rho_ 1,p/q]\), according to \(\pm\). \(D_{p/q}:\) Transition from frequency locked maps with ratio p/q for which all periodic orbits have period \(q\cdot 2^ n\), some n, to maps with a periodic orbit of period not of this form after accumulation of an infinite sequence of period doubling bifurcations, yielding periods q,q 2,q \(2^ 2,... \). \(I_{\omega}\), \(I^{\pm}_{p/q}:\) Transition from diffeomorphisms to nonmonotone maps with non-trivial rotation interval.
