Let \(\pi\) : \(Y\to Spec(R)\) be a good resolution of a hypersurface singularity where \(\dim (R)=2\) and R normal and local. \textit{J. M. Wahl} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 104, 325-356 (1976; Zbl 0358.14007)] had introduced the functor ES, infinitesimal equisingular deformations. The author introduces in the above situation, a new functor ESE-equisingular embedded deformations - then there is a natural transformation ESE\(\to ES\) and the author gives sufficient conditions for this to be formally smooth. All these are inextricably connected to a study of the Newton polyhedron of the defining equation of R.
