In the author's book ``Existenz semiuniverseller Deformationen in der komplexen Analysis'' (1988; Zbl 0644.32012)] the existence of semiuniversal deformations is proved under very general assumptions. These assumptions are fulfilled for example in the following cases: deformations of compact complex spaces, deformations of principal fiber bundles over compact complex spaces and deformations of coherent analytic sheaves with compact supports. In this paper it is proved, that - under the same conditions as in the above mentioned book - the base R of a semiuniversal deformation contains a maximal modular subgerm. It is also shown, that R is a local moduli space if and only if the space of relative automorphisms of the semiuniversal deformation is smooth over R.
