The \(n\)-dimensional Schrödinger equation is considered when the potential \(V(x)\) grows like \(| x| ^\rho\) as \(| x| \to\infty\) for some \(\rho\geq 0.\) According to the Trotter-Kato formula [\textit{H. F. Trotter}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 10, 545-551 (1959; Zbl 0099.10401)], \(K(t/N)^N\) converges to \(\exp(-tH)\) as \(N\to\infty\), where \(\Delta\) is the Laplacian, \(H=-\Delta+V\) is the Hamiltonian, and \(K(t)=\exp(-tV/2) \exp(t\Delta) \exp(-tV/2)\) for \(t>0.\) The authors estimate the operator norm of the error term \(\exp(-tV/2)-K(t/N)^N\) as \(N\to\infty\) in terms of the growth parameter \(\rho\) for various classes of potentials satisfying certain smoothness or boundedness conditions.
