Let \(C\) be a complete nonsingular irreducible curve of genus \(g\) over an algebraically closed field \(k\) of arbitrary characteristic. Let \(u:S^ gC\to\text{Pic}^ g(C)\) be the Abel map of degree \(g\). The reviewer has proved [Math. Ann. 281, No. 1, 1-6 (1988; Zbl 0626.14025)] that this morphism is the blow-up of \(\text{Pic}^ g(C)\) with respect to the prime ideal defining the subvariety \(W^ 1_ g\) which represents special invertible sheaves of degree \(g\). This paper is devoted to generalize this result to the morphism \(c:G^ r_ d\to W^ r_ d\). Let \(\tilde W^ r_ d\) and \(\tilde G^ r_ d\) be the blow-up of \(W^ r_ d\) and \(G^ r_ d\) with respect to \(W^{r+1}_ d\) and \(c^{-1}(W^{r+1}_ d)\), respectively. It is proved that there exists a unique morphism \(\tilde c:\tilde G^ r_ d\to\tilde W^ r_ d\) such that the following diagram is commutative: \[ \begin{matrix} G^ r_ d & @<\tilde h<< & \tilde G^ r_ d\\ c\downarrow_ r & & \downarrow \tilde c \\ W^ r_ d& @<h<< & \tilde W^ r_ d\end{matrix} \] This result is applied in \S3 to construct an explicit factorization of the blow-up \[ {u:S^ gC\to\text{Pic}^ g(C)} \] into a sequence of blow-up and blowing-down processes with respect to nonsingular centers, for general curves.
