The key result of this paper asserts that every extension of a quasi- measure \(\mu\) from an algebra \({\mathcal M}\) of sets to the smallest algebra containing \({\mathcal M}\) and an additional set is a \(\sigma\)-convex combination of extreme extensions of \(\mu\). The result is then used to extend two theorems on extreme extensions of measures on \(\sigma\)- algebras, due to \textit{H. Gail} and \textit{R. Bierlein}, respectively, and published by \textit{D. Bierlein} and \textit{W. J. A. Stich} [Manuscr. Math. 63, No. 1, 89-97 (1989; Zbl 0663.28004)], to the case of quasi-measures on algebras. The proofs rely to a large degree on Riesz space arguments, and it is pointed out that most results remain valid for positive additive set functions in a Dedekind complete Riesz space; see also the author's recent paper ``Components in vector lattices and extreme extensions of quasi-measures and measures'' [Glasgow Math. J. (in press)].
