This somewhat delated birthday volume dedicated to Frederick Mosteller (born 24.12.1916) has been prepared together with 53 contributors (friends, admirors, colleagues, and former students). It provides a critical assessment of his professional and research contributions to applied statistics and his high skill as editor and expositor, his organisatorial efforts at Harvard, where he chaired four departments. It contains a biography by J. W. Tukey and a bibliography of his works. The final chapter assembles 21 new book reviews that examine these efforts. The influence of Milton Friedman and of Samuel S. Wilks is being traced. 13 photos are presented. A personal and a subject index conclude this very informative work.
