The main result of this article is the following theorem: Let \(X\) be a complete algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field \(k\) of characteristic \(p\geq 0\), and let \(G\) be a finite abelian group of order \(q^ r\), where \(q\) is a prime different from \(p\), acting effectively on \(X\) via automorphisms. If the fixed point set consists of one point \(x\in X\), then \(X\) is singular at the point \(x\).
