The authors continue the study of \(q\)-orthogonal polynomials started in \textit{M. E. H. Ismail} and \textit{C. A. Libis} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 141, No. 2, 349-372 (1989; Zbl 0681.33011)]. Introducing an extra parameter in certain basic hypergeometric functions and using contiguous relations for the balanced \({}_ 3\phi_ 2\) series that arises, they give 6 solutions to the recurrence relation satisfied by the associated big \(q\)-Jacobi polynomials, any pair of which is linearly independent. Among the solutions given is the minimal one (for \(n\rightarrow\infty\) and for \(n\rightarrow -\infty\)). Then, using Pincherle's theorem, these minimal solutions are used to study the corresponding continued fraction. The orthogonality of the underlying polynomials is looked into and finally, using special choices for the parameters, \(q\)-analogues for two entries in Ramanujan's second notebook are derived.
