The Feigenbaum theory plays a key role in investigating a period doubling transition to chaos in the ordinary systems. In this paper an approach using renormalization group techniques is developed for coupled map lattices. Two models are discussed in details: lattice and continuous. Two types of coupling are distinguished, inertial and dissipative, and their influence on dynamics near the onset of chaos is discussed. Numerical simulations demonstrate the existence of scaling and universality as well as they show examples of spatial patterns and spectra for both types of scaling.
