\textit{J.-L. Waldspurger}'s famous identity [J. Math. Pures Appl. (9) 60, 375--484 (1981; Zbl 0431.10015)] relating special values of twisted \(L\)-series of modular forms of even integral weight with squares of Fourier coefficients of modular forms of half-integral weight has received much attention and been reproved by various authors (Kohnen, Gross, Iwaniec). In this article, yet another proof is presented for the special case that the weights are 2 and 3/2, respectively. The basic idea is that the value of the twisted \(L\)-series of the modular form \(f\) of weight 2 occurs as (average of) Fourier coefficient(s) of an Eisenstein series of Klingen type associated to \(f\) which can be written as a linear combination of theta series of quaternary quadratic forms. An average of representation numbers of these quaternary forms is then shown to be related to products of representation numbers of ternary quadratic forms. This arithmetic identity provides the link to modular forms of half-integral weight, and Waldspurger's formula can then easily be deduced.
