The authors use existence results obtained by variational methods to prove the nonintegrability of an analytic Lagrangian system with two degrees of freedom whose configuration space is a torus or a cylinder. As an application, the nonintegrability of a double pendulum in a certain domain of parameters is proved and possible applications to systems with singularities is discussed.
