In an earlier paper [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 39, No. 1, 48-60 (1989; Zbl 0672.20005)], \textit{R. Knörr} and the author have shown that Alperin's weight conjecture is equivalent to the vanishing of a certain alternating sum. In the paper under review, it is shown that Alperin's weight conjecture is also equivalent to the vanishing of a refined alternating sum (taking characters of central \(p\)-subgroups into account).
