Considerable attention has recently been devoted to monotone twist maps. But occasionally one finds situations where maps are not monotone. Some important instances include orbits in particle accelerators, plasma wave heating and fluid dynamics. The authors study the dynamical behaviour of a family of nonmonotonic twist maps of the cylinder, for which the existence of horseshoes is established. The authors prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the horseshoes goes to the dimension of phase space as the parameter goes to infinity.
