A subspace \(Y\) of a topological space \(X\) is said to be \(K_{1}\) embedded if there exists a map \(\varphi :\mathcal{T}_{Y}\rightarrow \mathcal{T}_{X}\) such that for any \(U,V\in \mathcal{T}_{Y}\), if \(\varphi(U)\cap Y=U\) and \( \varphi (U)\cap \varphi (Y)\neq \emptyset\) then \(U\cap V\neq \emptyset\). The author shows that a \(\kappa \)-metrizable space (i.e. \(K_{1}\) embeddable in the Tychonoff cube \(I^{\kappa }\)) with a dense monotonically normal subspace is metrizable. It is deduced that a stratifiable Banach space in its weak topology is metrizable. For the space \(C_{p}(X)\) of continuous real-valued functions on \(X\) with the topology of pointwise convergence, the author obtains that it is stratifiable iff \(X\) is countable (resolving a problem of Arkhangelskij).
