In this article an approximate renormalization scheme in order to study the breakup of invariant tori is constructed. It acts on the following Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom, quadratic in the action variable \(A=(A_{1},A_{2})\), and described by three even scalar functions of the angles \(\varphi=(\varphi_{1},\varphi_{2})\): \[ H=\tfrac{1}{2}(1+m(\varphi))(\Omega \cdot A)^{2}+[\omega_{0}+ g(\varphi)\Omega]\cdot A+ f(\varphi). \] The transformation has two main parts: a KAM transformation which is a canonical change of coordinates reducing the size of perturbation from \(\varepsilon\) to \(\varepsilon^{2}\), and a renormalization transformation which is a combination of a shift of the resonances and rescaling of momentum and energy.
