A matrix pencil approach is proposed for the FDI observer design. The approach is developed through examining the existence of analytical redundancy for the purpose of FDI. Based on the numerically stable staircase form, the decomposition of singular matrix pencils, a systematic design procedure for the FDI observer is proposed. Three classes of faults, component, actuator and sensor faults can be treated in a unified manner. As indicated by several design examples, the procedure enables a computer-based automatic design of FDI observers.
