This work presents a thorough discussion concerning the definition and properties of various material time rates of Lagrangian strain measures, objective corotational rates of Eulerian strain measures, and related spin tensors needed in the formulation of sophisticated constitutive equations of continuum physics (anelasticity, rheological laws). Lagrangian strains measures and Hencky's logarithmic strain measures receive special attention. A new derivation of the Carlson-Hoger's general gradient formula for arbitrary generalized strain measure is given as well as a proof of a general conjecture of these authors for the \(n\)-dimensional case. The authors disclose general properties for objective corotational rates and associated spins, and establish a general basis-free expression for objective corotational rates of an arbitrary Eulerian strain measure in terms of the left Cauchy-Green tensor and the stretching tensor. Finally, all commonly known spin tensors and corresponding corotational rates are shown to be incorporated in these general formulas. Special cases are mentioned (objective corotational rate of the Eulerian logarithmic strain).
