Half-explicit Runge-Kutta methods for the solution of differential- algebraic systems of index 3 are introduced. Such problems arise, for instance, in the simulation of constrained mechanical systems. Half- explicit methods are advantageous compared to fully implicit schemes, because they only treat the algebraic variables implicitly. Order conditions are derived and convergence is proved for some particular methods up to order 3. Several numerical tests are made which confirm the theoretical results.
