A sub-Riemannian manifold is an oriented \(n\)-manifold endowed with an oriented \(k\)-distribution, equipped with a positive definite metric. Sub-Riemannian symmetric spaces constitute a class of sub-Riemannian manifolds with special symmetry properties. By analysing the involutive Lie algebra naturally attached to the sub-Riemannian symmetric space, the present paper completes the classification of simply connected contact sub-Riemannian symmetric spaces given in [\textit{R. S. Strichartz}, J. Differ. Geom. 24, 221-263 (1986); correction ibid. 30, No. 2, 595-596 (1989; Zbl 0609.53021); \textit{E. Falbel}, \textit{C. Gorodski} and \textit{M. Rumin}, Int. J. Math. 8, 317-344 (1997; Zbl 0881.53025)].
