Classical solutions of problems of best interpolating systems are the key for solving corresponding problems in optimum design theory. The common basis is the problem of maximizing the determinant of moment matrices. Thus the zeros of the classical orthogonal polynomials are support points of \(D\)-optimal designs for different polynomial regression models. The author makes use of his generalizations of those results in design theory in order to derive identities for orthogonal polynomials which seem to be new. The main tool is the concept of canonical moments. As special cases he obtains new identities for Legendre, Chebychev, ultraspherical and Jacobi polynomials.
