This paper gives an exposition of the well-known results of reduction theory (compactness criterion and construction of a fundamental set for \(G(\mathbb{A})/G(k))\) for reductive groups over global fields, treatment in a uniform way number fields and function fields. Split groups are treated first. The proof is reduced to the case of \(\text{GL}(2)\), \(\text{SL}(2)\). Next, using Galois descent, the compactness criterion is proved in general and finally the result on fundamental sets is proved by reduction to semi-simple rank one and again using Galois descent. The introduction of the paper gives a review of older proofs.
