This biography was originally published in Russian in 1990. The theoretical physicist M. P. Bronstein (1906-1938) is mostly known for his work on the quantum theory of gravitation. His career ended abruptly when he was arrested by the NKVD in August 1937. As a victim of the political purges under Stalin, he was sentenced to death for ``anti-Soviet activity'' and executed in February 1938. The book includes much information about theoretical physics and the relation between science and society in the Soviet Union during the thirties.
