The authors study the integro-differential equations \[ y'(t) = ay(t)+\int_0^1 y(qt)d\mu(q) + \int_0^1 y'(qt)d \nu(q),\tag{1} \] and \[ y(t)+ \int_0^1 y(qt)d\mu(q) + \int_0^1 y'(qt)d \nu(q)= 0,\tag{2} \] with initial condition \(y(0) = y_0\). It is shown that the generalized hypergeometric function \({}_AF_B(\alpha_1,\ldots,\alpha_A;\beta_1,\ldots,\beta_{B};t)\) satisfies the first equation when \(A\leq B\) and the second when \(A= B +1\) provided \(\mu\) and \(\nu\) are certain smooth functions. The unique analytic solution of (1) is shown to be \[ y(t) = y_0 \sum_{n=0}^\infty \left(\prod_{k=0}^{n-1} {a+\mu_k(1)\over 1-\nu_k(1)} \right ) {t^n\over n!}, \] where \(\mu_k(1) =\int_0^1 \tau^kd\mu(\tau)\) and \(\nu_k(1) =\int_0^1 \tau^kd\nu(\tau)\) and a similar formula holds for the solution of equation (2). Other ways of expressing the solution as a generalized Dirichlet-Taylor series are discussed as well. The asymptotic behaviour of the solutions is studied and in certain cases these general results give new information about the behaviour of the generalized hypergeometric functions.
