    Positive solutions of the system \[ u_t=\text{div} \bigl(a(u) \nabla u\bigr)+ f(u,v), \quad v_t=\text{div} \bigl(b(v)\nabla v\bigr)+ g(u,v)\text{ in } \Omega \tag{1} \] with positive initial values for \(t=0\) and boundary conditions \[ {\partial u\over \partial\eta} =r(u,v),\;{\partial v\over \partial\eta} =s(u,v)\text{ on } \partial\Omega, \tag{2} \] where \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n\) is bounded, \(\partial/ \partial\eta\) is the outer normal derivative and \(f,g,r,s\) are positive and (weakly) increasing in \(u\) and \(v\), are considered. The main result is as follows: If all positive solutions \((\varphi,\psi)\) of \[ \varphi'(\sigma) =r\bigl(\varphi (\sigma),\psi (\sigma) \bigr),\;\psi'(\sigma)= s\bigl(\varphi (\sigma),\psi (\sigma)\bigr)\;(\sigma\geq 0) \tag{3} \] blow up, the all solutions of (1)--(2) blow up. If (3) has a global solution \((\varphi,\psi)\), then conditions involving \(a,b,f,g\) are given such that all solutions of (1)--(2) blow up or exist globally. In the case where \(a(u)= u^\alpha\), \(b(v)=v^\beta\) \((\alpha, \beta\geq 0)\) and \(f,g,r,s\) are of the form \(u^pv^q\) with (different) values \(p\), \(q\geq 0\), concrete results in terms of the exponents are given. By specializing to one equation, a corresponding theorem for \[ u_t= \text{div} \bigl(a(u)\nabla u\bigr)+ f(u), \quad\partial u/ \partial\eta =r(u) \] is obtained.
