The stable Steinberg group \(St\) is the direct limit of the Steinberg groups \(St_n\), it is given by generators and relations. There is an epimorphism \(\varphi\colon St\to E\) (the elementary linear group) with \(\ker\varphi=K_2\). Extending an existing result for the special linear group, the authors show that every element in \(St(F)\), where \(F\) is a field, is a product of four or fewer involutions.
